1996 Defender 130 Suspension and Tyres

Hi Fellas, need some good advice on what to do with my suspension and tyres. Currently got standard tyres on it and standard coils and shocks. A couple of the shocks are stuffed...not sure if the coils are ok. I go on 2-3 4wd trips a year...nothing major. Thinking those new Mickey Thompson All Terrains with the side lugs or BF Goodrich All Terrains. Does anyone know what size I can go to by just keeping them on my standard steel rims. I would also like to put a lift kit on it when I put new shocks and maybe coils? I am a pretty good home mechanic...I do all my own work BUT am pretty inexperienced with suspension stuff. Was after some ideas on what brands, where to get it from and whether or not I can do it on all of the topics above. Am sick of all my mates giving me grief when the Defender gets stuck in mud etc...thanks heaps for your help. Jamie

Lots of info out there on suspension for Defenders. My advice is don't rush it, get some good tyres and go from there. You're only doing a few trips a year so getting stuck occasionally out in the bush with mates might be better than loud tyres on the bitumen every day. It's all a compromise.
Or just put a locker in the back and drive everything..... well most things.

Mud tyres on a Defender = lots of noise. There is zero sound insulation!
Can't see the need to lift a Defender, as they are seriously high already. Just more complications with prop shaft angles & etc.
Get some nice shock absorbers (Bilstiens/Koni) and think about a TrueTrac diff - that's a pretty good start.
No need for monster tyres either. I like 235/85's which are the bog standard size, but a lot got to 255/85 (?) which is just a small step up.
That's my thoughts!
Cheers
David
