    electrical puzzle

G,day guys, I recently bought a 96 disco V8. My most recent drama (yes I said them most RECENT, I've had a few so far) seems to be some sort of electrical problem. About half the time I go to start the car there's nothing happening. No clicking or dash lights or anything. If I use any electrical source eg. fan speed switch or headlights, the car wiil start. It also decides to konk out occassionally whilst im driving it. It has a problem idling most of the time but when its playing up it wont idle at all. I took it to my local auto sparky today and he checked it all over for me and says he cant fault any of the components. The car wouldn't start for him today and he suggested i turn on the headlights whenever I have the problem (Wonderfull auto sparky). Could any of you guys shed some light on this for me. This car is driving me insane

    Any help would be appreciated

    Cheers

Insanity is a prerequisite for LR ownership so soon you'll be in your element

Sorry to hear about the problem.

It sounds systemic given the broad range of symptoms.

Does the 96 have a "black box"..... an ECU?

I'll bow to greater wisdom and knowledge on this as my Disco is cable driven and chip free. It just sounds like a computer playing up.

Sounds like a ECU prob take the thing to a landrover place and get them to check the thing out
I think auto sparky's can't be stuffed half the time especially if its a hard job to do

'96 Discoveries had a problem with the alarm spider unit, but your problem seems to be a power supply issue.
Sounds like the ignition is getting a backfeed from some other source (fan/lights) instead of where it's supposed to be coming from.
    Any unusual/bodgy wiring around?

The first thing to do is clean every earth conection you can find, then every other electrical connection you can find. I would use wd40 and wire wool but there is probably something better you can use.

A pain in the ar$e, but you will learn a lot while your doing it, especially if you refer to the wookshop manul as you go ie "what the hell does this do".

My idle problem ( 97 V8 auto ) was mostly caused by a stuffed vac advance unit. To test pop the hose off the throttle body and suck. If you can draw air through it continously, its buggered. You should only be able to draw a small amount and hear the distributor internals moving as you do it. Recoed ones are $60 and you will probably need to reset you timing.

Also clean the butterfly valve in the throttle body and the idle air control valve ( AKA stepper motor ) using carb cleaner.

    Good luck.

I had problems with mine not starting, it was the ignition amplifier earth strap, had to much mud on it, gave it a good clean and put some good heat sink stuff on the amp and it hasn't missed a beat since 8)
