Land Rover Discovery Series 2 TD5 Filter Service KIT | eBay
Deano![]()
Hi guys,
Not sure if this was the right section or not
Just bought myself a 2001 Disco TD5 Manual.
It's got 225'000kms on it
One owner, full LR service history up until 210'000
Now as I've just bought it, of course I want to do a service on it.
(Was going to atleast do the first one by a shop then The rest myself)
Been quoted 'around the $600mark' by a local workshop to do
'All oils/post purchase service' by a local LR specialist
This seemed pretty pricey to me but then I started pricing parts myself from Repco..(these are retail, I get slightly better mates rates)
Ryco Cartridge(centrifugal) - $85
Ryco spin on (standard) -$33
Ryco Fuel filter- $105
Ryco air filter -$52
Then you've gotta include all the oils aswell- $60 for Penrite Diesel 5w40 and you need 2 bottles(or 1.5)
Then front and rear diffs
Gearbox
Transfer case..
Now it's starting to make more sense why it's so expensive to be done at at shop..
For future reference, does the centrifugal filter need replacing each Service?
To do just engine oil alone would be a $200odd dollar job, even if I've done it myself..
Any recommendations what I should include for the first service, rough prices(or somewhere cheaper than Repco!)
Cheers, Cameron

Thanks mate, just ordered one of the kits..
Wonder why the Ryco gear was so expensive?!
Update:
Bought the service kit from Roverland (great service!)
Also bought all the oils as per the Penrite website specs
But a few Qs regarding them
Engine oil
Specifies 7.2l of 5w-40 semi-syn
-I've got 10L of Penrite 5w-40
Front and rear Diffs
Specifies 1.6L of 75w-90
Is this 1.6l per diff (so 3.2l all up) or .8l per diff(1.6l all up?)
Gearbox(5mt)
Specifies 75w-80 2.3l/2.8l with cooler
-How do I know if I have an oil cooler for the gearbox?
-Didn't have any 75w-80 (in any brand) in stock, I grabbed 75w-85 Full Syn, is this okay?
Transfer case
Specifies 2.0L of 75w-90
Also makes mention of 4wd differential
Which requires 1.6l of 75w-90
Is this separate to the transfer case?
So I've left the shop with
10L of Penrite 5w-40 Diesel 5 Semi-Syn
-For the 7.2L Engine itself
8L (2x4l) of Nulon 75w-90 'Smooth Shift' manual gearbox and transaxle oil
- for the Front and rear Diffs(3.2l?), 4wd Differential (1.6L?) and Transfer Case(2.0l)= total 6.8L?
5L (2x2.5l) of Penrite 75w-85 ProGear Full Synthetic for manual gearbox and transaxle
-for the possible 2.8L req'd for the Manual Gearbox
It that everything covered?
Please let me know if I've got the wrong oil, missed something, or done myths incorrectly!
Cheers, Cameron
Love the fact you are getting into this, but you should get the RAVE CD which will tell you everything you need to know about servicing and maintaining your Disco, and then practice using Google to search key words on your questions as the all the answers are already on this or the many LR owners forums.
In answer to some of your questions: front and rear diff is same as 4wd diff. Transfer box also has a centre diff (covered by the transfer box oil change). And if you have a gearbox oil cooler you will find it under the intercooler in front of the radiator. Follow the oil cooler lines running from the gearbox to the front.
Have fun with your first service.
Here mate,
Have a read of this:
www.discovery2.co.uk/maintenance articles
Have a read of this one too, being a TD5, I would check your ECU plug for oil.
www.discovery2.co.uk / Workshop /Injector Harness
And here is the best info you will find about which different oils are compatible:
Oils - can we set up a definitive list

This may help as a cross reference for maintenance/servicing. Just delete any info in cells relating to my car and replace with yours as appropriate. I also have a lot of articles etc taken from this site that might be of interest.

The Service kit came with a CD manual (containing everything from Oil change instructions to installation of practically every factory option- including the Gun Safe!)
I'm assuming this is whats referred to as the RAVE CD?
(bought the good old Haynes manual just the other day too- not quite as detailed as i remember them being!- but good backup in case im not near a computer)
Service is happening tomorrow morning at a local mechanic who the family uses for all the car services- Normally i'd just do it all (coming from a V6 Twin Turbo AWD Mitsubishi Legnum, I know my way around an engine bay and not afraid to get my hands dirty!)- Already done the air and fuel filter..
But, for the first service, for the sake of a hundred dollars or so, ill hang around, give him a hand and have the convenience of learning my way around the under-carriage with it on the hoist, plus, it supports the 'little guy' mechanics
Another quick Question, the Fuel filter i'm guessing doubles as the water separator?
is there a way of priming the system again after changing a filter? (besides the key on for 30 seconds, repeat 5 times then crank with the accelerator pinned- As per the manual for an empty tank)
I didn't have any diesel on hand to fill the filter with again prior to install, and as a result, the first crank look a fair few goes priming the lines again!
