I spoke to an exhaust bloke who quote $450 to do a full system from turbo back on my TDI.
He would upgrade it to a 2.5" system and free flowing mufflers.
I spoke to 2 guys who claim it is like having another 1/2 gear in HP.
He claims it goes alot better and economy is from 10l/100km to 8.5l/100km
Not bad.
Now all i need is my exhaust to pack it in.

Im considering doing the full job
8) most stuff i have seen says no improvement ditching the original manifolds, something about extractors changing the power band, causing problems when 4wd driving.
my 95 disco is standard without cats - rego rules of the time classified it as a truck, so an import series 1 disco should be legal to ditch the cats.
i blew the muffler on straddie trip, so i replaced it with a lukey muffler called 'turbo' . its a straight thru jobbie and sounds good. not too loud in the cabin.
as for economy, its a disco. i don't think anything changes it, seems to make little difference thrashing it or cruising. only the noise changes
and it still has the original resonator at the back.

hmmm, having done the 2 and 1/2 exhaust thing, (one only straight thru "muffler" ) I can tell you
the big rev downshifts do nothing for the economy
sounds wonderfull though,,
and is now a normal everday driving thing.

If you want some trick low resistance smoke boxes get some Gonzo's from Gonzo pipes at Wynnum in Brisbane. Gonzo make these spiral type baffles and they flow heaps, he makes lotts of race pipes including super car stuff.
I normally get any engine mods done at Gilmour developments at acacia ridge, I was just interested in other peoples results 8)
cheers
OK,
I initially replaced the back 1/2 of my system (muffler back) This improved responsiveness, the note and economy by a couple of L/100km. The replacement pipe is 2 1/2", muffler is not a straight through jobbie but flows much better and ther resonator also flows better.
Wanting more I then put on some HM headers. These have a noticeable improvement in torque, most if it is higher in the rev range though.
As far as cats go, you can purchase hi-flow cats to replace your std one, if it is choking things up. Hell, you can get a 3" cat if you really want.
End result is a package that has improved the std deal without being obtrusive with the note.
Thats what I like to hear
The question is,,
do you want power or torque?
and
where do you want them?
I cant see the reason for shifting the max torque figure (2400rpm-3.5 V8)
UPWARDS???
the trick with the oversquare 3.5 is to make the max torque figure low enough to be usefull.
as always
its horses for courses.
