Mine was weeping during a Cape to Cairo trip, never ended up being "low" between 10,000 km service intervals. But there are weeps and then there are weeps.
Hello all, I have tried to search but it keeps saying that the token has expired? Anyway I have a big trip coming up, and when I had some work done at MR 's last week they put some advisories on the invoice, one being that the transfer case main shaft seal had a weep! The transfer case as always been this way as long as I've own her, but I've never done the sort of k's that I'm going to be doing on this trip, which means keeping a eye on this fluid level all the time, not sure how much it will lose at a time? My Q is has anyone done a big trip with a weeping transfer case or should I shell out and get it sleeved? It's an expense I can do without at the moment, still a lot more to spend on stuff I had budgeted for. Thanks ted. PS, or should I put the finned expansion sump on for extra 900 ml of fluid?

Thanks, I appreciate that there're weeps and then there's weeps, I only seem to get a couple of drops on the cardboard that I put under her in the garage, the main concern is with all the K's I'm planning on doing in a day! Is it more likely to lose more? Anyone done a big trip and had this problem?
Surely just keep checking it regularly and topping up as required?
How long is your trip?
Before I pulled mine out it leaked like a sieve. It was that way for 10 years and it only ever took about 100mm at each service. Keep an eye on the levels and you'll be fine.
It's a big job to fix as far as labour goes if you are paying someone to do it. If you have the means and capacity. To whip the transfer case out yourself, then it's not so bad.

That's what I was thinking, I was unsure with the design of the box with it splashing on the gears! Also I have kept an eye on this and it seems to me that the weep is coming from the top area of the transfer case there is no weep around the hand brake drum, would this indicate a rear main seal weep or something else! Not trying to second guess MR.
The intermediate shaft seal is generally the first thing that goes. That is above the hand brake drum.

Thanks, bacicat, that makes sense, the hand brake is dry as a bone. doing the K's is the worry really, but if I check it every day/night I should be able to keep on top of it, just wanted reassurances that it wasn't going to let go all at once? I would love to have a go at repairing the T'case but have never ventured there so would be foolhardy!
I wouldn't worry too much - if it is full when you start, just check it every few days - you would be surprised how little oil it takes to make a BIG mess. The overdrive on my 101 ****es oil out - covers everything in a fine mist of the stuff, but it barely makes a dent in the oil supply of the transfer case - I drove it 3,500KM in ten days and I lost bugger all.
You'll be right.
