I'm sure the guys here are very knowledgeable, you can also try the outerlimits forum. They have tech sections for all the different makes and the rover guys are very switched on.

I was searching the net for something the other day and came across a V8 forum. Mostly the chatter was about Rover v8s.

But there is a mailing list for Buick/Rover/P76 V8s. I used to be subscribed to it.

Send an email to majordomo@autox.team.net with nothing but subscribe buick-rover-v8 in the body of the message.

It's not a forum but it has the advantage of there being less off-topic stuff. Fewer twits, too (referring, of course, to the Overlander and Aust 4WD Monthly fora)

I dunno maybe just me, keep the motor simple. Just rebuild the stock setup but make sure it's balanced and do it right. More you 'fiddle' the more spot on everything has to be to work properly.

Change the exhaust over to a set of dualies for the right exhaust note and change the bump stick to get the right lump in the idle.

I'm noticing more and more I seem to have this bad fetish for lumpy idle and dual exhausts. ops:

Maybe ditch the twins carbs and go for a single quad throat, I think the spread bore would probably be better than square for the setup. Rochester ? Don't get me wrong twin carbs are great things, if you use them and sadly most people don't which is why I suggest the change over.

Ah the memories of rebuilding motors, greatest feeling when it starts first go...relief of I fluked another one !

I am in particular interested to replace original inlet manifold and Zenith-Stromberg carbys with Edelbrock Performer inlet and Edelbrock 1404, 4 brl. carby, new camfashaft (to get some 20 hp more and good, flat torque), maybe replace exhaust system. I have electronic ignition (Lucas 35DLM8).
But this would be pretty expensive and that's why I would like to talk to somebody who made it before and who experienced results...

Other (cheapper) option is to put Zenith-Strombergs to the big bin and use SU. (This change provided classic Range with additional 20 hp in 1987).

adamv8, 2 years ago, a mate and i rebuilt my engine, roughly the same as yours, mine is in a 1984 oneten ute. we got hold of a fairly new 4 litre short motor (block, pistons crank), got an old but servicable 3.5 from a mate that was throwing it out, we took the heads, timing cover, sump and flywheel off and either reconditioned them ourselves or in the case of the heads and flywheel, sent them to a profesional reconditioner. we got a new camshaft from bruce davis, i think it was a "stage one" cam that wasn't too radical, a mechanic mate of ours put the motor together on his day off (and unfortunately had trouble interpreting the timing info sheet with the camshaft) we put the motor in over a weekend and fitted my manifolds to it.
we had trouble,( every inlet pushrod bent) due the timing stiff-up and took the heads off again the next weekend, had them checked, put them back in with new pushrods and sent it up to my mates work (a landrover dealer) where one of the gun mechanics got it running very nicely.

there is also a book out titled "tuning rover V8 engines" by david hardcastle. which is very informative.
he reckons that with supercharging and nitrous oxide you can get about 720 ft/lb of torque at 300rpm which could get you down the standing quarter mile in about 10 seconds
