Spline wear was very common on early R380 boxes. There was a drilled transfer case input gear that supplied more oil to the splines in an attempt to fix it.
Spot the difference.......
Check out spline wear as well!

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.
I wonder if the older hafts with the roll pin in the oil control ring shoulder have anything to do with their weakness?
I was trying to point more at the broken shaft rather than spline wear![]()
Both gearboxes are J suffix. Broken one had pin in oil chanel hole, other didn't. Abd rings or two half rings to be more precise are different. Is this to be expected?
Also os this breakage something usual for these?

Dave Ashcroft could probably provide some insight into this.
Hi Dave may well come along later but in the meantime, this is a very common break point on the ' J'. Box shaft, look closely at the undercut each side of the groove???. Later 'L' shafts do not have this under cut and are far less likely to fail, they also have a longer spline to reduce pressure and wear. In my opinion do not reuse a 'J' shaft replace with an 'L ' shaft and retaining collar ( fits in the groove where your shaft sheared) For best results also use a later gear if possible as they also have a longer spline as well as the cross drill oil feed. I will ask Dave if he will put an upgrade package together, shaft, collar, input gear(we will need tooth count) . Regards. Ian Ashcroft
