110 Stalls on step incline

Can anyone offer some suggestions?
I have a 1988 3.5lt V8 County which performs well in the bush until I need to go up a steep incline.
All's ok for a short time then the motor dies. It sounds like it runs out of fuel :?:
After a moment or two, I can start the motor and get a little bit further before it does it again.
I have replaced the air filter and fuel filter. But that's as far as I have gone at this stage.
One place told me they would put a carbie kit through the SU's and tune them, but I don't feel convinced that this would solve the problem as the vehicle runs well otherwise.
The fuel pump is in the fuel tank so not easy to check.
Any thoughts would be most welcome.

The twins on the rover engines are renound as one of the best off road carbs. So there must be a problem witrh either them / fuel pump / fuel lines etc.

Have you checked the jets in the carbies? They may be blocked, so use some carby cleaner.

Is there enough fuel pump pressure?

I think that running a carby kit through tem is a good idea.

Good luck, report back with what you find.

Dave.

The car will have CD strombergs not SUs. I'd check the float levels, pump and filter.

fuel starvation on steep inclines? hmmmm.......

sounds like sticking needles in the float bowls not openning sufficiently to allow enough fuel in to carby

or

fuel pick up in tank...should it have a surge tank/swirlpot in the tank?

fuel might be running away from pickup

does it make a difference if the tank is full?

Thanks for the replies
It makes no difference with a full tank.
I am going to make a few phone calls today and see who would be the best in my area (Geelong) to look at the carbies.
Thanks. Will let you know how I get on...

Friends diesel cuts out when on cross slopes, usually one to the left and does it full or half full tank of fuel. We figure it is to do with the pickup pipe location as any other angle it's fine.

I don't know where the fuel pickup is on county but I'd wonder about Tony's comment of fuel around the pick up. Maybe you might have to do a surge tank addidtion to make sure there is always fuel available.

surge tank shouldnt make any difference with a full tank...only really needed when level drops below 3/4 full i would say.

i once had a mazda which used to drive fine as long as it had more than
half a tank of fuel. below this level it would stop picking up fuel randomly.
there was no set pattern other than fuel level. to get it running again i had to remove fuel filter and blow into fuel hose till i could hear bubbles in the tank. then it would run again till the next time it did this. could be 5 mins could be 5 weeks. could not find solution.......

one day i had the tank out for some reason (cant remember why)
and noticed a rattle in it. i pointed the filler to the ground and shook it
and out fell a slither of broken plate glass.

never had the problem again after that...still dont know how it got there

second hand cars.....who knows

moral: could be a simple problem which has nothing to do with logic causing it.

maybe i should have saved that story for a campfire.........??

sorry got off the track a bit...... to start checking where the problem lies
insert a "t" piece into fuel line at carbies and run a length of fuel hose to windscreen with a fuel pressure guage in the end.

you can now see if you lose fuel pressure up hills.

if it drops you have just eliminated the carbies...problem must be fuel pump/tank related.

simple test...5 min set up. may save you overhauling carbies for nothing.

let me know
