    Defender major service, which oils?

My '99 model defender 110 extreme is almost due for a major service.

I've not done this before and I am wondering what oils I should use for:

    1.gearbox

    2.transfer case

    3.diffs

I have the workshop manual, but I wonder if it is different in Australia as it is warmer here. Also I don't know if the LR recomded oils are available here. Land Rover Australia recomended I use Mobil S 10w40 for the sump, whereas the manual is recomending 5w/30, 40 or 50.

    Thanks much,

    Martin

Hi Martin, I just went through this with my disco, I rang land rover in Bathurst and they use caltex oils.
Caltex MTF 94 - Manual gearbox
Diffs and transfer case- Caltex Gear oil 80W/90
Engine oil- Caltex Havoline Semi Synthetic

These oils were all recommended by Caltex technical support. The MTF 94 for the manual gear box is forumlated by Caltex especially for land rover.

For more info refer to the thread titled "Caltex Oils Formulated Especially for LandRover" should be in the first couple of pages still.
Castrol oils are good but they are expensive. I know you get what you pay for but Caltex is a reputable oil and I have found it to be good, if you are on a tight budget Caltex is the go. Matt

Ace, thanx for the info will check out post discussing caltex oil too.

Trojan, mine is the TD5 which unless I'm much mistaken doesn't have a timing belt.....it has a chain drive.......I think...could be wrong on that tho, I'm sure somebody will put me in my place if so..

    thx

Hi Martin, I just changed the oil in My 98 TDi disco today and I got the oil from caltex as mentioned above, but after you queried the grades in you question I compared Caltexes recomendation with what was listed in the Haynes Manual. In the haynes manual for the TDi engine oils from 5-15W/40 are all ok to use. Matt
