Regulator.
I'm lost, I have a Magneti Marelli A127-85 Alternator on my disco. Acellerating up a hill the idiot light came on, cool, pulled it off and checked it out. One of the brushes wires had broken, so I fixed that and reassembled it, but it still isn't charging (I'm getting sick of having to put the battery charger on every night)
There is nothing burnt or cracked or obviously broken, resistance across the three phases is the same, brushes are making good contact, nothing else I can really think of so any ideas??

Regulator.
Have you checked the output with a multi-meter????If not you shold get around 13.5 to 14.5 volts without the lights on,then check with the lights on hi-beam shouldnt drop by much more than 1 volt.If it is puting out the full charge, your battery may be the problem.
No charge could mean the regulator is shot as Jay suggests. Also there may be an"exciter" which switches the regulator on,but Im not too familiar with the Disco alternator to know whether it has an exciter in the system.Perhaps others know.

absolutely no output voltage at all, I agree that it is probably the regulator, I cant find any info on the net or any where to check it though. I would rather do the work myself as the going rate for an auto sparky is around $100-00 an hour up here
No, it's only half dead.Originally posted by AnthonyParra

As for info about alternators, local library ? The best method is prey on apprentices, bleed them of what you need to know to do it yourself, then buy only what is needed.

Ok so my alternator is only just dying.... I gues there is a reason behind this and the reason is MUD :x I had the car almost up to it belt line for about an hour in the big mud puddle at black duck  it has slowly done its damage 8O
