you probably won't get the reg out without removing it from the engine I did mine with this kit
Land Rover Discovery 2 Defender TD5 Fuel Pressure Regulator Rebuild KIT | eBay
Hi Guys
Any of you replaced the fuel pressure regulator element without removing the fuel block???
Im having no fuel pressure on start up after overnite park.I just replaced a fitting on the fuel filter that I was sure I damaged cleaning just before my issues started. It didnt work.
I have ordered a new regulator only(see ebay from spain) with the gasket plate if full removal is required.
Its only a circlip that holds the fuel pressure reg in,its a generic regulator, shame is ford/dunnydoore regs are the same dimensions but expensive.Assuming one can deploy the circlip pliers one shouldnt need o remove the fuel block.
I had to replace the original fuel pressure reg soon after buying the D2 so it may be faulty again.

Is your fuel pump running? Did you bleed the system properly after a filter change? I doubt the reg just died overnight. Was everything anal-retentive clean? A small speck of dirt can block a fuel pressure reg or injector.
If the reg is blocked, it should still start, but not run very well. The reg works by regulating the excess fuel back to the tank, so you should still get something on start.
If the reg is stuck open and relieving all the pressure, you should at least get a bit of a start, there should be a bit of fuel at the injectors.
The only other thing is the steel mesh filter in the block, but to check that requires dropping your fuel reg off the block!
No you cant get your paws on the diaphragm element without removal. I have done 4 in the last 2 months! (not on the one car)
The regulator in the cheaper repair kits seems to be a 10 dollar chinese knockoff of a bosch bit. I used a new gasket kit from ebay and a legit bosch regulator bit to rebuild mine, since I go off road it seems false economy to use a knockoff regulator element. It was 113 from repco or 50 bucks from the USA.
You mentioned giving things a clean. Have you tried to look around the engine bay, and had a look at things like the injector loom? Is it full of water from a recent deep clean? Ditto for the Crank sensor plug.
Would love to know what you find.

I have had this issue for over 12 months so plenty of diesel thru its guts in this time!!!! I put it down to stuffed glowplugs, replacing them proved it wasnt.
Only need to leave the thing overnite and it needs to be bled to start, once running its all good and will start properly every time.
Still ruling the fuel pump out, despite never replacing it and no reciepts for it ever been done before my ownership.Mine is chiped and the fuel pump doesnt struggle keeping diesel up to the motor
Have replaced the fuel block in the first 2 years of ownership as it was leaking.
Also wondering if its a fuel filter issue, its a genuine one at the moment.
Air can be heard squealing thru the filter before the first start in a day, whilst bleeding.
Thanks
Andrew

May have had a win with this issue
Problem is Im unsure what has fixed it.Its started twice after an overnite rest and overnite plus a day.
2 posabilities.Firstly the part on the fuel filter I replaced. When you read about its purpose it says there is a membrane that when soaked in diesel it doesnt let air through(or similar, would have to look it up again).Perhaps the new part hadnt had had time to become impregnated, interesting as I can **** things up without trying
The other fix.I swapped ECUs the day before normality returned.Put the standard MSB ECU instead of the flash tuned NNN.Perhaps something has gone amiss with the NNN ECU startup mode???? UNSURE.
New fuel pressure reg hasnt got here yet,may hold off skining my knucles for the fun of it
The only issue, bloody seatbelt gong has somehow self activated during the ECU swap, vehicle has never had it before.Had a brief go at deleting it whilst inh the city yesterday,I dont need to hear the 3 amigoes alarm every time I turn the key

It seems normality has indeed returned
Drove it this evening after 2 days rest and it fired up like it should
See how it goes after another spell.
