    Checking the auto transmission fluid

    Just looking for the right answer as I have read conflicting information.

    The handbook says to check the trans fluid when the engine is cold.

    The workshop manual says when at operating temperature.

    Which is correct ? Does it make much difference ?

    It makes a big difference between hot and cold,the oil expands by quite a significant amount when hot.
    Transmissions on some of the machinery I operate have a sight glass with a thermometer built in,you check it on level ground when cold,the level is almost empty,when at operating temp the level is 3/4.
    You need to find the correct checking temp and idle status for your vehicle,Im sure somebody with the identical spec vehicle here will help.

    Thanks for the advice and sorry to seem so dumb.

    I have checked it both hot and cold and as you point out it seems OK when hot but quite low when cold.

    Most of the literature says to check in Neutral, idling when cold.

    I'll take that as the rule and work from there.
