Auto trans controller / at ecu v8 to td5 disco 2

Hi, been trawling through the threads here about the transmission on the d2 td5. I have recently ( still ) parted out my v8 auto d2, but also have a d2 td5. I hate they way it just revs, and have to be close to 90km for tc to lock. I drive in 3rd most of the time until I hit a 90km + road! but it's my wife's car! and she mainly drives it! and keeps it in drive.
Any way, I've tried to manually lock the torque converter, by cutting the wire from the controller, all I do is through a fault, and it didn't lock.
I have just put my v8 controller on the td5, haven't yet driven it though.
I have read all threads I can find on this, and all I find, is that it is not recommended.
Can some one please tell me why?
I understand different torque and revs of the engine, but I want it to lock earlier, so what is the problem, what if any damage will happen?
I'd like to fit the v8 tc too, but I'm certainly not going to take the trans out just for the sake of swapping.
    Thanks simon

The V8 Torque converter won't fit the TD5. (Most obvious difference is that three bolts connect the TC to the flex plate on a TD5 and four bolts on the V8.)
There are different (part number) Transmission ECUs for the V8 and TD5 and also different part numbers for different V8 (High Comp/Low Comp) and TD5 (EU2/EU3) engine variants.
How many Km on the TD5 transmission ?
How long since it was serviced?

Yeah ok, maybe I'll keep the fly wheel too then.
I've just driven the td5 with the v8 controller. What a change, the revs much lower, torque converter locks up at a sensible speed. Haven't even needed to put it in 3rd.
Very happy so far unless someone is going to tell me I'm going to damage some thing

It sounds like ashcroft do a conversion kit and I found a German gentleman who shoehorned the v8 torque converter into his 300Tdi. Apparently the same fitment as td5.

I was astounded at the looseness of the 300Tdi torque converter. Manual gearbox looks like the best solution for me.

So you swapped the valve body on the auto gearbox?

Funny my 2002 TD5 auto locks at 80KMh all day then will stay locked down to 70Kmh on light throttle. to lock it I accelerate to 80+kmh then ease off and it locks within a couple of seconds.

In third it locks at 70Kmh and will stay locked down to 60Kmh.I am not completely sure but I believe in third it locks on overrun above 60Kmh.

Are you looking at a cold transmission in cold weather as the transmission will not lock until engine temp is I estimate about 76c or so. It can take a looong time to get to that in cold weather.
So there may be something wrong with your particular car.MAF?
    Regards Philip A
PS pardon my ignorance but I was under the impression the valve body just takes orders from the ECU on an auto via the Canbus activating solonoids.

Philip do you have a modded converter in your ZF, AFAIK there is no lockup in 3rd on the ZF4HP.

My td5 won't lock when cold, like you say, it will only lock once a certain temp has been reached, I thought this was the auto trans oil temp though, nothing to do with maf. I have never looked at this though, only what I thought.
In drive I need approx 90km to lock, then can slow down to maybe 75ish, but it is still faster than the roads around Perth until I hit a freeway.
3 rd will lock when selected, and that's normally what I drive in, it locks about 70ish, and can slow down to about 60ish.
The way it drove before was that it was high revving, it felt very wasteful, had to give it a fair bit to get it up to speed, reving over 3000rpm, now, I can keep revs much lower, when I get up to speed, it generally keeps below 3000rpm, it is happy to go through gears, and in drive, will lock about 65km, and revs about 1500, as compared to driving along at 2500.
Feels so much nicer, and more productive with the engine power, rather than feeling like the power is just being wasted through the torque converter.
I know that the tc is the same, so should still feel the same, and can not be any more responsive, but it is a completely different car now.
I like the way it drives, where as before I hated it. So much difference.
I will post here after driving it for a while ( not that I get to drive it much as it's my wife's car ) but will give you a better idea on how it feels, as I have only driven it once yesterday, so may not have felt any issues there might be.
But so far, seems great, works fine up and down gears, kick down, lock up / unlock, all seems much nicer now, and hopefully better fuel, and keep the transmission much cooler.
All I have down is change the transmission controller under the passenger seat. No valves, no tc, not even an oil change. Just a 5 min job with the transmission controller.
