Umm, the factory fill was a 75w-80 so why is a 75w-85 so outrageous ?
Bear in mind it can take up to 1000km for the friction modifiers to embed themselves into the cone faces, how many km had yours done ?
And BTW, which oil ?
R380's can be idiosyncratic and some just shift better with an ATF but most find lubes like Castrol Syntrans 75w85 a vast improvement over an ATF, particularly when hot with a small penalty at sub zero temps.
Personally I rather better gear and beating protection and no rattles and baulking when hot over a km or two of sightly slower shifts.

The guy at autobarn said the same thing, and we questioned penrite. Only drove about 250ks though. Cars done 272k. Oil was penrite.

I ran ATF in mine for 400,000km's simply because of the better shifting,I changed it every 40-50,000k's and it worked fine, when I moved to WA it started to grate when hot,40+ degree's over summer so I changed at Rick advice to Redline MTL,it took a few K's for it to settle but I find hot or cold the MTL works in my gearbox.I know quite a number of R380's running Penrite with happy owners, same for Castrol.
