toyota 80series to rear of D1

i was just at fulcrum suspension in brissy buying
a front urathane panhard rod kit, when i asked if toyota
80 series shocks would fit disco series one?
and they do! but he said that you put them in upside down?

 why why?

the object of all this is that the monroe shocks in the disco
are about dead, i want to replace them with a better quality
shock, ie bilstien, koni ect. but i also want a longer shock for
 more downward travell.

 any thoughts?????????
