Need roof racks for new Disco 4

    Hey all

We have just bought our first Land Rover yesterday, a Discovery 4 SE and we now need to organise roof racks for our existing roof box.

The dealer (Alto) is offering short rails and cross bars for $1500. Or long rails and cross bars for $2000. My husband thinks the short ones are enough for the roof box (it's long enough for school).

Roof Rack World are offering to DRILL holes in our roof for tracks and wing bars for $800. I don't like the sound of them drilling holes in our roof.

Did I see someone on this site suggest that you don't need the rails or tracks and you can just attach cross bars to the existing thing on the roof.

Haha, I am a girl! Not very technical!

    Hi Tawmii,
    Welcome to the forum.
If your Disco has roof rails, and it sounds like like it does, Thule make a range of bars to fit, their "wing bars" are about $400

Here is their car fit guide.

    Hi,

Under the rubber strip down each side of the roof are prethreaded bolt holes, or riv nuts. There is no need to drill holes in the roof, and that is the last thing you would want. These existing mounts are used to bolt roof rails onto the roof. ( the runner strip comes off, and the roof rails are bolted in place ) The short LR rail is very short. I would ask to see them on a vehicle. The long rails cover pretty much from the rear to just short of the dip in the roofline, and are probably still best described as a 3/4 rail. Once you have roof rails mounted, cross bars or roofracks can be attached to them Rhino, Frontline, and several other manufacturers make suitable rails and roofracks or crossbars. A full roofrack also uses a front mount just above the windscreen. ( also under the rubber strip ) Your quotes do seem pretty steep. I would look around a bit more.

Have a good look around, and ask the owners of Disco with racks that you like , what they are, and where they came from. Some forum members may post their racks or rails for you to view.

Check out the markets section. There are a set of LR short rails for sale. I think I recall $200. A bargain

We have MY14 and are looking at these, they also come in the short version as well. They also have a video showing how they are fitted, very informative.

A couple of people on this site have also had these fitted & recommended them.
