Thread: S11a Axle Check Straps

I installed diesel gearbox mounts on the basis they are stronger but makes no difference.

I'd guess with the shorty check straps they are the same from S2 to S3. Mine are 34in long from end to end.
The 2A shorty chassis in the shed has wider check straps than my S3 though it has LWB springs and shock base mounting plates so I'd guess they are LWB check straps and are longer anyway.

I got a new set for my toy from 4WDs in Melb via mailorder,cost something like $15ea

I wouldnt bother using the straps.

Use diesel mounts for the reason Hellspawn mentioned, when i replaced them on my old car (holden conversion) i ended up using LR diesel mounts.

On the new car (stage 1 V8 ) i will probably use jag mounts.

I have pulled a shocky end off with a broken strap.Dont they also prevent the diff over travelling and pulling the tailshaft apart at the slip joint??

Cheers Guys. but if you look at the gearbox mounts one has a greater angle to it. Which side does that go?
I'm picking that it's personal choice whether or not the check straps are used?

Okay lets be clear about what you're refering to as "mounts". :?

I've interpreted the rubber blocks as the "mounts", which go on either way around.

I've been out and stood on my head looking under mine to make sure.

The steel arms that are on the transfer case will only go on one way to line up with the crossmember.

The packing plates to which the rubber mounts attach and bolt onto the chassis crossmember are two different sizes. The smaller of the two goes on the RHS which could be seen as the less angled one. The big one or "the more angled one" goes on the LHS to push the transfer over to the right so that the driveshafts line up.

Another of those things I don't pay much attention to until someone asks. After 5 rebuilds of my gearbox in 8 months you'd think I'd know without having to go look to make sure. ops: [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/laugh.gif[/img]

THe axle check straps I think are needed to stop things going too far, but their length I htink can vary a little. Mine for example have very little length under the axle, but I think they may bhave been cut short.

As for the gearbox mounts, I thikn both of the rubber mounts are the same, but are just mounted at different angles.

Thanks Jay. I guess my terminology was a bit amiss. Yes I meant the parts which mount to the gearbox crossmember. I thought of the brackets and the rubber mounts as an assembly as that is how I removed them.
