Thread: Is importing really worth it ??

Vlad might know or have the contatcs to find out..... as recently when i did a tour of the Customs / Aussie Post mail centre they were talking about duty paid on good bought overseas -

its one of Australian Customs jobs to collect duty - in fact next to the Taxation department they are biggest revenue collector in AUS...

but i digress, they were saying that freight on stuff bought online at such sites as EBAY can push the price of things over the thresh hold and cause GST to be charged....you cannot get your stuff till ya pay GST so they have ya by the short and curleys .... 100% of mail is xrayed so theres no way round it ... unlike sea shipping containers which only 5% ish are xrayed

well i am hoping to bring a load of spares with me when i bring my 2 trucks over

I usually only respond on the Range Rover and Disco forum, but I will make an exception, seeing I have direct experience in this case.
I have imported several things from Paddock and saved a heap of money . The biggest was a power steering pump . best OZ quote was $610 and I just finally found the correst Visa bill for $403.16. Also a steering column complete with top and bottom UJs for $204.
The law on customs states that an entry is not required for mailed goods under $1000. This does not mean they will not bill you. In practice the pump had some "opened by Customs for inspection" tape on it and no bill.
From I think Jan 1 2005 the personal import allowance increases from $400 to $800 so you are safe up to an FOB of that amount.
By the way AFAIK customs in OZ is calculated on FOB not CIF so freight cost is not an issue. If the invoice is under the personal import amount the freight should not be considered for customs.
Paddock are really good to deal with and very fast.

mm i have so much to learn. In the uk paddocks are (in my experiance ) expensive

What PhillipA says about concessions is nearly right.

For passengers travelling on an international flight, the current duty free concession is $400 per adult. In February 2005 this will increase to $900 per adult. Be advised however that the bylaw (as it currently stands, although it may be redrafted) will mean that if you exceed your duty free allowance you will be charged duty/gst on the FULL VALUE of the items you have. (as opposed to the excess amount as is currently the case). Also of interest to us as LR people, is that car parts will be specifically EXCLUDED from concessions - which is to say, they will be fully liable for duty/gst irrelevant of value.
