TDi owners: check your fuel line.

Howdy to all Tdi guys ( and hopefully Tdi girls) out there. Somthing of interest to all Tdi owners that might save you a lot of headache in the future. My new acquisition, a 95 3 door Disco Tdi 300 showed symptoms of poor starting, occasional sluggish performance, and some surging. I thought the fuel lift pump or the injector pump were on the way out. Checked the line joins for leaks, checked the sedimenter and filter , all OK. Then had a brainstorm about the line itself- it may have a split, letting air in but not letting fuel out. Closer inspection of line revealed chafing at where the line exits the engine bay, at the body mount. the line had, since manufacture 10 years ago, been rubbing againt the sharp edge of the mount support, and was worn enough to let air in, but not leak. I was able to jury rig some ordinary flexible fuel line using the original fittings, and lo and behold, a fully functional Disco. If you can feel some irregularities in the line at the point I mentioned, then it's probably better to fix it asap.

Good one, Langy. I don't have any symptoms as yet but I'll be sure to check it out next time I'm crawling around under the old girl.
