3 Bolt Power Steering Steering Box - Worth Rebuilding?
G'day all,
The steering on my 1984 110 has a lot of play (steering wheel moves from 10 o'clock to 2 o'clock position with no effect). I have tried adjusting the top screw on the power steering box, but it doesn't lessen the backlash. All tie rod ends and arms are tight - no play. I assume the box needs reconditioning? The box has done 480,000km. Is it worth rebuilding the 3 bolt box? I have read that the 4 bolt box is a good replacement, but I'm not interested in spending a lot of money on an old vehicle.
If it all gets too expensive I'm not fussed ditching the power steering and getting an unassisted unit.
Thank you,
Edward

Hi
4 bolts well bolts straight up with a hole enlargement and different end fittings (main hassle search threads is info around or go to hydraulic workshop)
Why not source a second hand 4 bolt? Can't be that dear and a working car is always worth much more than a broken one.
I never bothered rebuilding mine.
It's worth it, a huge difference to the vehicles steering
