    Oil leak around oil filter.

I have this annoying leak from around the oil filter lip area.
I have ried different 4 brands of filters. Ryco, cooper, Valvoline and one from 4 wheel drives.
I have replaced the timing cover so the oil filter face on the cover cannot be suspect.

I have tightened the filter as per specifactions. I have tightened it even further.

The sump doesn't leak. I've investigated that.

The oil cooler pipes have new "o " rings and it doesn't appear to come from them.

It isn't leaking form pressure switch

It isn't leaking from the head or any where else.

It always seems to drip from under the oil filter lip and then gets blown all over the engine underside.

I tried degreasing the engine and checking for leaks. I won't leak then.
Itonly appears when I have driven around for a while and then I can't find the exact source as by then the oil has been blown around.
It is really starting to P and Qs me off!

Any one else had this and what was the fix.
I was even comtemplating running a small bead of silastic around the fileter lip , but worried it wouls prevent removal of the filter later. icon_cry.gif

    Oil leak

I had somthing similar with my old rangie v8. It turned out that it was infact the oil temp( or 2nd oil press switch - I forget) switch that was leaking, and dripping onto the filter lip. The top of the switch fractures and leaks under pressure- which is why you don't see it whilst stationary I suppose- it then drips down under gravity to the filter lip, and no stain around the thread area. Either that or the o-ring on the filter does not settle in when you assemble it. ( Not wishing to insult your abilities: we all forget the simplist things sometimes) Try re-assembling the oil filter with grease on the o-ring.

Heres something to think about, if the motor in your disco is a 300tdi, the ford Z9 filter that fits every ford motor since Adam was a boy, will screw on and filter very effectively. Very cheap at $4.50 from big dub and superslack. A few people that never see any decent offroad will get away with using this filter. HOWEVER, be warned, the Z9 is about 2" longer and on full diff articulation it will get hit by the diff housing and put a dent in the bottom of the filter. No worries, just a small dent. What does happen is the sideways stress that is put on the cast alloy filter housing can cause it to either break or put a small crack in it just above where the filter screws on. This may have happened to you and you can't see the crack and hence the constant oil leak problem. Any way, thought this might give you another avenue to explore.

I never use Z9s as they can cause the damage as per last post.
I think I have found the leak. Difficult to find as my oil is so clean.
I pulled the oil pressure sender out as there was a film of oil around it and found the "o" ring was very hard.
Not having a correct spare 'o' ring I used some silicon with it and refitted it. Fingers are crossed now hoping that was it.
Might explain also why it only leaks after I have been for a drive and not when the engine is running. Not enough pressure to force the oil out??

I know of one engine failure caused by using this filter the filter was holed by the diff causing loss of oil and seizure during a high speed run up the freeway.

I guess by using the ford filter you'd be better off going to the remote oil filter system. Extra filtration would be handy tho' the risk just isn't worth the few dollars for the right part if you don't.

$14 or so isn't that expensive for the proper filter in the big picture of things.
Imagine if you took it to a dealer and had an oil filter/oilchange, both diffs, CVs, tranfercase and gearbox oil change. The $ saved doing it yourself, surely would make the extra $10 affordable!
