Tdi disco owners are going to love this tale......

Howdy Tdi owners; you are going to love this little tale. You might remember my earlier post about checking tdi fuel lines a couple of days ago... well,it gets better. My disco was leaking a bit from the front seal, and when I opened the front wading plug, out comes a fair amount of oil. Fair nuff, since I don't know when the last timing belt went on, down to the dealers for a new one, & new front seal. Easy. Reasonable prices.
Ring ring......(direct quote)....."Are you sitting down"... "Your crankshaft pulley just fell apart into three pieces, the crankshaft keyway's had it and we'd like you to give us $6 1/2 grand to fix it.

Hence why now I'm looking for a 300tdi crank in the wanted section.

Addendum to check fuel lines: Pull the belt off , and wiggle the crank pulley. Check that woodruff key. If it flops around replace the bugger. They only cost $3.40.

And I've only had the Disco 14 days...what a steep learning curve.

Langy

ps fear not, my trusty Rangie will save the day.

Hi Langy
Talk to an engine reconditioning shop, that crank should be able to be reconditioned,we had a Chamberlaian tractor when I was working on a farm with the same problem, was about $300 to rebuild the crank plus labour to remove/re-fit.

Tdicranky

Thanks gentlemen,
I'm working on reco shops as we speak... it's always good to have options.

For LR hybrid 100, thanks for the kind words... You won't remember, but it was you and your mate who suggested AULRO to me some time ago at Pick and Payless Blacktown. It's only now that I've time (well had time until I fix disco..) to get on line.

Langy

ps There are the remains of a 97 Disco at P & Payless, but it's a v8 and half burnt. Auto, axles and block still there.

Chewing out the keyway is a common problem with them.

I've seen a few in KLR Automotive's workshop with that problem.

You could try ringing them but they won't be back in the workshop until about 10th Jan

You could go to the auctions and find a rear ended disco for way less than $6500 and then you have lots of spares.

I spoke to Brain at LVS, as P38a says its a common issue - as pulley works loose.

LVS can supply a secondhand crank for $750 if this is of any help (LR brand new price about $2,500!!!!!)

Just checked the price list I have from Karcraft and a brand new one - LR part number ERR2112 is $1,340.73 + GST

Again the job is more of a labour job - motor and box split / remove etc.

I would try an engineering firm first - they can even do them on the vehicle without removing the engine 8O

Ring Brian at LVS and ask him for the engineering contacts he has used.
