    excessive lighting.....

Just wondering about how people run 2x spotties on the bullbar and then another 4x spotties on the roof !!!

How do they do it ? Do u really need a second battery ? or bigger alternator ? or both...

Interested in doing something similar on my disco already have 2x Lightforce 170's on the bullbar, but i'm going to change them to the 240's and will eventually put the 170's on the roof racks with I hope another 2x 170's or the 140's maybe.

Speaking of lighting, what do people have as a rear light ?

    Matt.

    Hi Matt
Yes, you really need to go for the dual batteries at least. You only need to start adding the amps each light uses, plus the headlights and you will see you are coming close to the alternators output.
You need to use heavy cable also to carry the current over the distance to your roof spotties.Make sure you run fuses as close as possible to the battery, even better use circuit brakers.
There is a really good Series website detailing the ins and outs of wiring, wiring looms and the maths involved in working cable sizes for current load.Very handy if you are doing the work yourself.Have a look at
www.mrbean.net.au/~rover/ The electrotech section is what you are chasing.
If the site is no longer there try a search on "Mustang Sallys Landrover Pages". The site was put together by Peter Howard,a Series enthusiast in QLD.

Be careful with the lights on the roof rack. I have been told it is illegal to use them on the road here in NSW, you are only permitted to use them off road or on roads which arent major highways, or something like that. Check out the VIC regs. It also depends on who sees them and how paeety they are. There are cars in NSW with them and they seem to get away with it. Matt

Hi Matbor, I’m not sure how your high and low beam operate but on my Rangy, the low remains on when you switch to high beam and I still run 6 additional driving lights, 2 IPFs up front and 4 Hellas on the roof. I have had no reason to add an additional battery to cater for all the lights.

Having said that, I use Phillips Crystal Vision globes, there are probably other similar brands. The Phillips are current rated at 55 watts but are light power rated at 100 watts and they have WHITE light. I’ve now been using these lights for about 3 months and they are much much better that the standard 130 watt globes I use to run in the 2 IPFs.

Ace is right about watching where you use them, a mate from NSW was out in Central Qld and a young gun booked him with a $240 fine and made him remove the roof light there and then.

I have made up a set of roof racks that are semi permanently fitted to the roof and the 4 Hellas are mounted on a single square steel tube that is held in place by 2 bolts. All the wiring goes down one side of the Rangy next to the windscreen, under the back of the bonnet and into an 8 way plug and socket. All the relays, fuses and the rest of the wiring is permanently fitted under the bonnet.

I usually remove the roof lights by day and it takes no more that 3 or 4 minutes to fit them and plug them in.

Over the Christmas weekend I was out west and the white light made a huge difference when it came to spotting roos.
    Cheers

You mention the srystal vision globes are these suitable for retrofit to any light ? Eg do they have hi/low beam versions to replace the globes in my Defender headlights ?

WHo has experience with Lightforce 240's. Apparently they have a new filter available which turns the yellow light output into a whiter colour ?
Can the globes in Lightforce lights be easily and successfully replaced with the Phillips globes you mention ?
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

If fitting new globes to plastic lens lights, you might need to ensure you get UV-cut globes so that the plastic lenses don't go opaque over time.
