OK after looking and looking at this damn thing, I can see no possible way of attaching this heat shield thingy.
Soooo is it even supposed to be there?.
My next Turbo will be a dumb one

Well after many hours of Googling, I found the info I needed on a VW forum. Turns out the heat shield just sits there between the cartridge and the impeller. What I think I had done wrong is, the shield is slightly dished, I had it around the wrong way so it was hitting the impeller. Well I hope that's it

Pretty sure they're supposed to be flat, but yeah dished into the vanes would explain some noise.

Well I worked out what was happening with the heat shield.
What I was doing was fitting the heat shield between the exhaust impeller and the cartridge, now this is where its supposed to go, but you need to fit it when the Turbo is on its side so the shield is laying flat. If you try fit it with the shield and turbo in the vertical position (normal Turbo position), it just slips down.
So the heat shield is held into its position by the outer diameter of it pressing against the ring the vanes are on (can't remember its name) and the inner diameter pressing against the turbine cartridge like meat in a sandwich.

So now I have no more rattles, but boy it has a really loud Turbo whine.

Test run take two this weekend

    (Once I sort the alternator)

Bent shaft putting the compressor wheel on a different orbit?
    Boost or exhaust leak?

Nope, idiot miss matched the wrong thrust washer and put the compressor wheel into the housing.
Time to rebuild another and pay more attention this time.
