So went to get a cylinder head temp gauge today only to find out have to wait a few weeks so thought I should find out the correct way to hook them up.
Gauge in question is an autometer sportcomp gauge, all electric so quite simple really but wondering where one does put the sender. My thought was the bolt in the middle of the head on manifold side between head bolts 2&3 when tightening but am open to ideas.
Engine is a 300tdi and also what temp should I be looking at seeing on the gauge keeping in mind that its in farenheight not celcius

A couple of years ago I got a new head from Turners in the UK. At the same time I fitted a TM Watchdog.
I then sent an email to Turners for some advice. Below is a copy of the email.
My question to Turners.
I have fitted a TM4 engine watchdog. It measures the engine temp not the water temp. I have the sensor bolted to the head near the front injector.
What is the maximum safe temp that the engine can reach, taking into account I am measuring metal temp and not coolant temp?
Their response.
The metal temperature will be more or less the same as the coolant due to conduction. Water should return through the thermostat housing at around 90 degrees C.
However under heavy operating conditions the temperature may well be higher. It is not uncommon to see temperatures around 110 at the back of the cylinder head
