since they gotta come out count the teeth.
I'm a bit confuzzled about what ratio mine has and it's never required diff repairs. Somehow I've snapped the thread and nut off the pinion shaft coming home on the rear diff (made noises on overrun and on inspection could almost pull the driving flange out of the seal).
I managed to get home by removing the axles and rear driveshaft, engaging high four and drove off the front diff.
The speedo has always showed 10 km under which makes me wonder whether the diffs have been swapped or not.
How do I tell what the centres are so when I put it back they are still the same ratio ?
since they gotta come out count the teeth.
Hi Jay
The codes on the diff housing are no good to you,the centres may have been swapped.
Turn the wheel and count the no of turns the pinion does,if they are standard you should come up with 4.7 turns of the pinion to 1 wheel turn.My btothers 2A had 4.1 to 1,aparently a rover car ratio. He now has 3.54:1 rangie ratios.
Goodluck

Count the pinion teeth (PT), count the crownwheel teeth (CWT)
Divide the CWT by the PT.
That is your ratio

8O Ohh !! I was thinking it was something easy like...the ratio was stamped into the crown wheel.
Probably get it on the axle stands tomorrow and stick the driving flange back in, turn the wheel and count the rotations.
Thanks....
Swapped diffs today.......4.7 it is...... 8O looks to have been overhauled as there's very little wear on anything like bearings, pinion/crownwheel teeth..... even the shims look unscathed and considering the caning it got make the find all the more surprising. The oil was a good indication though clean as new stuff.........
It's pity I can't at reasonable cost just replace the pinion and crown wheel.... could stick it back and it'd be schweet... $400 ex England though for those two....
Anyway in the mean time we'll see how much trauma the replacement can tolerate.
I have two for sale with lockers if interested.
Go for it Jay
Its time you destroyed another gearbox

8O NOOOOO !! ...... Not the gearbox again !!!
You know.... I was thinking about lockers when I pulled this diff out... it'd be launch control at the traffic lights
Okay you're right... could be another gearbox rebuild on the horizon.
