Replacing 300tdi big end bearings
Gents
G'day
Im contemplating replacing my big end bearings on my 95 defender.I will be removing the sump to re seal it regardless. My engine has done 325,000 so I figured why im there ill do the bearings. I have read a few times they generally need doing at these kms.
For those of you that have done them did you replace the bolts and nuts too and are the bolts removable with the rod and piston still in the bore?
I appreciate the help.
Cheers
Michael.

Says in the manual to replace them. When I did mine BLR said they can't get them and to just reuse the old ones. Bolts slide out with rods/pistons in place check and replace thrust washers also. Mine where quite worn at same kms. Would not want to do it with engine in car think it can be done but would be real mongrel of a job to do with it in place.

I was only tackling the 't' seal. Manual says replace bolts.Like Randy, rang a couple of LRover suppliers and workshops who said they don't stock bolts - just reuse them. Bit frustrating. The bolts do not seem to be torqued to yield so in theory reusable many times over. I could find bolts of correct thread type but the heads were regular so couldn't be used.

I did my big end bearings on a 96 Discovery 300Tdi, easy as job with engine in. I would expect the defender to be similar? I replaced the oil pressure relief valve and spring while I had it opened up. I just had to remove the tie rod and steering damper and the sump drops down. I reused the same bolts too. I reckon you will find at that vintage the big ends will need doing and you will be glad you did them.
I never did get around to doing the main bearings. I read somewhere you can do all except the one at the back of the motor, but I never found out.
