Defender Failed To Proceed

Will wait for a reply from Ashcrofts, from what I could see on their website would be around around 950GBP for the box total plus freight. Agree if he does not want to blur the edges, but the additional bond is after all refundable if you send yours back. Still likely to be cheaper than the ones out here with standard bearings. So far in Australia can only find for $2200-$2400 plus freight each way so an additional $300 plus and $1000 bond if yours is not up to scratch.

He does. Dave and Joanne responded promptly to my emails. Just found the invoice, total of 845 GBP for reco gearbox outright, plus 165 6GBP for shipping. All very reasonable.



Yeah, don't blame you. I was going to try, but the damage was too much, and I'm blowed if I want to take the thing out again.

If you look back over that thread, as I just did, you'll see that many people have different experiences importing stuff. As I said, do your homework. Could save you a bomb. The gearbox itself is brilliant.

I looked into sending ours back. The costs just multiplied. Do you know anyone in the UK? Perhaps they could by it for you, and send it as a 'gift' or something.

Pretty sure Ashcrofts only take returns from inside the UK as they have to pay duty on receiving 2nd hand items, which makes it cost prohibitive. This is what I was told when asking about a new auto for my D2.

Well this gets weirder by the minute, pulled out the transfer case and gearbox expecting to find immediate visible damage but no. While I dont have the whole box apart yet, I have the extension housing seperated and not off yet (need to remove the selector). The Layshaft is not broken or for that matter visibly damaged at all at this point. The bearings are fine as I would have expected as I only replaced them 18 months ago when I had the engine out. The only thing I did notice on removal was the Input shaft into the clutch/engine had a bit of slop in it and expected to see the bearing shot, however no. The retaining clip did seem to be damaged. I am not sure if this was from knocking back the extension housing but the layshaft front carrier bearing appeared to be sitting back out of the race.
As per the below pictures no apparent damage. The only other thing is the assembly did feel a bit heavy when turning by hand so maybe some other damage not yet found, though all seems to turn ok by hand. The trans case does not appear to be an issue but will be pulling all inspection plates off to check. I am now at a bit of a loss. Is it possible it could be a cv or half shaft????
The only other thing is when I knocked back the extension housing the rear carrier bearing actually dropped out. is this normal.

Edit: OK I have just found the input bearing has one roller lying on its side, so safe to say front input bearing is screwed so maybe more issues internally.

Front carrier bearing on layshaft, it has slipped back in a little, not sure if this was a result of separating the extension housing or it had actually slipped back prior as had not yet removed the front cover housing.

Ok so have found a bearing failure or more so a bearing retainer failure, this pic I have peeled back the retainer ever so slightly for the pic but was already buggered. Does any one have any experience in replacing these from the front if it is even possible rather than disassembling the whole box? Not sure if it can be done, there has been some discussion but not firm yes or no.

You had no drive I recall? So unless the input shaft bearing had heaps of play it might be time to look at the t-case???
