TC?
Well our camping trip is over before it began. The Defender had to be flat topped home. Only got about 20kms down the road and lost all drive. No bang just a bit of a whirring noise and smell of burning oil. This was at 100kmph.
About to start investigating but would appreciate some assistance fault finding.
Engine cut out, but when I stopped restarted fine. No drive in any gear even with centre diff locked. Clutch feels ok, gears feel like they are engaging ok on the gearbox and trans case. In gear can only roll the car with clutch in, even in neutral. Tailshafts and unis are still in tact, No oil rupture.
About to start investigating by dropping the oils to check for metal.

What year is it?
Can you shift into low range? If you take up drive are either prop shafts turning?
Well have had a look, initially thought may have been just the trans case selector as it was not engaging properly when we removed the inspection plate a bit of playing and rocking and it started engaging properly. Fixed that and put oil back in and not the case. However managed to get 4th gear only. So now leaning towards maybe a shaft breakage in the R380 box.
Looks like the box will have to come out.
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and reverse not doing anything. Even with engine running when selecting these gears feel like it is actually going into gear but no clutch required even when running.
Probably going to be easier to just try and get a recond R380, anyone know of any in Perth. To be honest just what we needed.

R380? Layshaft failure. It will still drive in 4th.
This is what ours looked like. Also at 100k. Hope yours isn't as bad. We replaced it with one from Ashcrofts, great price from them but the import costs were brutal, so have a good look if you choose that route, as I'm sure we could have avoided a lot of cost if we'd done our homework.
Yep R380. Would not drive in any gear to start with, but had the van on so would not pull away in 4th anyway. When we pulled the trans cover off and played with the selector ring we could then get 4th gear. Gearbox gonna have to come out. Looking at Ashcrofts last night looks around $2200 for a box delivered without exchange and hd bearings, so may go down that path, waiting on some info from them. Looking around atm most in Australia want $2200-$2400 for standard recon plus exchange and freight so puts it up around $2600.
I suppose the big thing I need to watch is import duties on a complete box.
Have to look into do you pay import duty on the whole thing or just on the excess over $1000.
Cheers
Craig
