Hey at least we are not out in this rain.
These things happen, at least we were only 15 - 20 kms from home not 200.
Now if I only had the spare cash for a locker and some more Ashcroft bits as well. Was so hoping it was the rear diff and not the box.

    Thanks Justin,
Will start pulling out when the rain eases here. Deciding whether we pull the box and trans case out as one or split as it will be done under the car and at present don't have a trans jack, may have to get one but can use the engine crane from the top. Last time out we were doing bits on the engine and the clutch so the whole lot came out together.
Now once out just to decide whether to rebuild or get a recond unit. Fortunately has not appeared to rip the housing apart and did not drop any oil. Only 1 tiny piece of metal found in the trans case oil.
    Cheers

Have to look into do you pay import duty on the whole thing or just on the excess over $1000.

When we imported the import duty and the broker we "had to have" and various other fees added up to more than the actual box. Still, it's a beautiful gearbox. As there is no exchanger, go for the latest one, suffix L I think it is.
Ashcrofts are brilliant, and very helpful. If they could source you a low K's S/H unit it may work out that you don't pay as much.
It hurt a lot at the time, but we have no regrets now.

Here's a thread from back then.

We split them. Two blokes under the car on stands, it's just too heavy.

    Thanks John,
Have looked at Ashcroft site and if I get the standard box on its own comes in under the $1000, if I go HD bearings puts it over. When you imported yours do they include the exchange bond in the cost of the box or just the cost of the box? I will need to confirm that with Ashcrofts as to what the actual value stamped on the paperwork would be. Shame the exchange rate has dropped so much in the last few months as would have come in under the $100o limit.
I think Dave from Ashcroft frequents this site and have sent them an email, so will see what they say.
Have not rebuilt a full gearbox before so would prefer to just get a box I think.
From what I worked out last night total would be around $2200 AUD for the HD box but then would need to add duties and import broker as have never done this before would need to find one. Still would come out about the same as buying here with me retaining the existing box.
Hoping there may be one in Perth area.
Not sure if i want to go down the 2nd hand path, would prefer recond.
    Cheers
    Craig

I bought a complete diff centre with air locker off Ashcrofts not long ago. Their chosen freight company handled all the import paperwork, all I had to do was pay them after they contacted me. No fuss, just added a few days to the delivery time. The fee for customs clearance was around $50, which I thought was fair.

Can't lay my hands on the paperwork, but I'm pretty sure the price was the two combined. Dave is brilliant, but he is unwilling to blur the edges, a position I respect, but I didn't think to ask him if the payments could be separate. As I said, I didn't do my homework.

He does. Dave and Joanne responded promptly to my emails. Just found the invoice, total of 845 GBP for reco gearbox outright, plus 165 6GBP for shipping. All very reasonable.

Yeah, don't blame you. I was going to try, but the damage was too much, and I'm blowed if I want to take the thing out again.

I think the problems arise from two things; the weight, which made it that DHL were the only mob too touch it, and the unit price. As I said back then,

    Customs Clearance $150
    Compile User $70.15
    Customs Duty $65.09
    Import GST $160.85
    Customs Processing Fee $55.20
    AQIS Lodgement Fee $25.00
    Quarantine Entry Fee $139.00
    DHL Fee $214.86
    Tax $24.52

    Sub Total $904.65

And, there is another $105.00 to pay before the item is picked up, and there is $85.00 a DAY if we can't pick it up exactly when they release it.
