end float?

if you mean wheel bearing preload it was in another thread only a few days ago.
do the hub nut tight and spin the hub to seat the bearing correctly.
then back off the hub nut and tighten it up just enough to remove the freeplay.
then fit the locktab and the the locking nut. this one gets done up tight.
but not using a six foot steel pipe.
the lock the two nuts with the locktab.

if thats not what you meant i just wasted my breath. 8O

its a real effort for me as i cant type for *****

I put a post about it in the general section, but basically the bearings were stuffed, and the outer one gave yp the ghost. it was all downhill from there.

the bearings must have been relatively even, because I really had no indication that there was a problem.

Ok, another quick question, how easy should it be to take out and refit the bearing tracks???

the ones that were in there were VERY hard to get out, and it looks like the new ones will be equally hard to get in. should it be this hard or should they slip in??

G'day Phoenix, First of all jack up the offending side and place on body stand and chockwheels/handbrake on etc, remove the hub (if it hasn't already fallen off ) turn it over on a solid surface and remove the hub oil seal at the back of the hub use a big screwdriver if you don't own a seal hook. Get a steel punch of at least 3/8" dia (10mm for the metric kids) and a reasonable sized hammer (not a claw hammer aint heavy enough and besides this is steel not wood 8) 8) ) using the punch or drift proceed to knock out the front cone/cup? (or the part of the bearing that stays insitu when you have the bearing in your hand) do it at 90 deg around the edge to stop it from jamming, turn the hub over and repeat, do a reversal to install the cone/cup using a drift (punch) made from brass if you have some (cause you don't want to damage the new ones do you!!!!) when you have fitted the rear cup/cone REMEMBER to fit the bearing after repacking it before refitting the seal (remember to use a block of soft wood to locate the seal so you don't damage it 8) or it will cost you another seal, the rest is easy, :? 8) cheers Dennis
PS any good quality bearing grease will suffice I use Castrol Valvoline would be just as good my personal thing is I wouldn't buy anything 'jl' recommends not saying it ain't any good but s**ff him anyway
