    300tdi problem

    Hey guys,
I've got a 300tdi Discovery that was running well before developing what I thought was an exhaust manifold leak or a noisy tappet. After pulling over I discovered excessive blowby when I removed the oil filler cap and what looks like a sooty deposit around number 4 injector. What are the possibilities? Head gasket? Rings? I will inspect further tomorrow just want to get some input on possibilities and where to start.

The soot around nr4 is a loose injector or blown seal. Tighten the injector retaining nut and see if that fixes it.

I will check injector tomorrow, but I'm now thinking there are two separate issues. The heavy breathing and blowby from the oil filler, which I know is not normal, and the injector leak. I hadn't notice either before this problem. Is it just a coincidence? Is there any way that they could be related?

How do you know the blowby is excessive? The breather could be blocked which will make the blowby seem worse. Problems are unrelated.

Was down your way this arvo pete, you should've rung me I would've dropped by. The excessive pressure could be a head gasket leak, I would also remove number 4 injector and check the seating washer. I have some if you need a replacement.

It seems to be a bit smoky and the oil doesn't smell right. When I checked it other times I don't recall seeing smoke. I'll double check in the morning.

Didn't get back till late Justin, the tilt tray took it's time. I'll be in touch about the washers if need be. Thanks.

    Hey guys,
a couple of new washers, thanks Justin, and all sorted. As you can see in the photo injector 4 had no washer and number 3 had just a plain thick copper washer. This has me a little worried about work quality on the rest of the vehicle.
The blowby also seems to be normal when I compared it with our other tdis this morning. Must have had a bad day yesterday, wasn't thinking logically at all. Thanks for the help guys.
