    More on rims

    OK. Let’s set the record straight up front. When it comes to matters automotive, I’m not the sharpest tool in the shed .. right.

    I’m thinking of acquiring a set of old LR rims, … RR or Disco. Upon said rims I wish to have mounted a set of muddies for scrub/mountain work.

    Now I’m not into self aggrandisement …. or flagellation for that matter, in case some of you knowledgeable folk are wondering. Accordingly 31” monsters should be left to those who, for reasons best known to themselves, feel the need.

    I’m thinking a set of 7” or 7.5” … nothing flash here, only requirement is to do the job. All I know is 165mm P.C.D. for studs. I’m looking to mount 235/85R16’s. Standard suspension setup etc.

    So now to the point of this little exercise. It has been said here and elsewhere, that the width of the rim is stamped thereupon. I have searched to no avail with regard to my std alloys and can find nought.

    What should I be looking for?? How is the width measured … inside the rim lip?? Is there model/part number which will fulfil my needs??

    Your profound input would be most gratefully accepted.

    Cheers

    I think you need to find a set of Disco Ser1 steels,16x7 and will fit those tyres no probs.31" tyres arent big,the 35" are the biggies.

    I stand corrected, as stated .. the shed tool needs sharpening.

    My wide aftermarket rims were stamped on the inside between the beads 15x8 which I have 31x10.5 duelers tyres on.

    The narrow 16in. landrover rim... well again on mine that are now on the project are stamped on the outside near the lug nuts along with manufacturer 'ROH', forgotten what they in size but they're road grippers.

    If it's not stamped on them, out with the tape measure and that'll tell you the size.

    LR rims are marked in a format such as this: 16x7Jx33

    16 = diameter
    7J = rim width and section
    33 = offset in mm (57mm for Disco II /P38A rims)

    Depending on the rim, it can be on the outer bead edge (alloy), inside the rim in a spoke (alloy), or in the centre of the rim near the bolt holes (steel).

    I can see we need to photograph some rims and put the pix of the markings up on the FAQ. This is an oft-asked question.
