hi ratio xfer case VS. 4.1 diffs

Hello,
In my reseach for good places to get a hi ratio xfer case and a reco trany for my 1974 S3 SWB 2.25 ltr. pterol I was recently told the following:

Don't spend for the hi ratio xfer case, instead, change the diffs from 4.7 to 4.1.

The idea being an ideal 15% improvement as opposed to the 28% improvement with the hi ratio. Theory is that the hi ratio xfer case is to high/fast for even a rebuilt 2.25 ltr, 4 cyl like mine. Although, it seems as if folks (like ashcroft; http://www.ashcroft-transmissions.co.uk/) are building these hi ratio xfer cases specifically for trucks like mine...

My goal is to improve hwy speed and reduce engine noise/trannny whine on road - I don't get off road often.

My understanding is that this 4.1 diff suggestion makes speedo reading inacurate, and also affects low range negatively.

I'm leaning towards a hi ratio xfer case but would love to hear from anyone who has done this reseach or put one in already. Thanks.

Any thoughts?

Get the H/ratio t/case as going from 4.7 to 4.1 diffs will stuff uplow range gearing.

Didn't we have one of these questions recently ??? :?

Regarding transfer whine.... it'll never go away no matter what you do. Grows on you as a comfort to hear the system tirelessly working away, well it is to me as if it didn't I'd be wondering "something just fall out or is everything still okay?".

If you don't do much off road and don't drop into low range too often, like for backing trailers into driveways then it's probably an option.

Whether you engine can cope with the extra demand of taking off from it will see is a gear too high is anyone's guess. If it can't bolt on a turbo or put a holden motor in.

do you intend doing ?

A) a lot of highway miles with a little offroad

a lot of highway miles and a lot of offroad

C) a lot of offroad and little highway miles

IMHO if answer

A then rangerover diffs or hi ratio transfer

B then overdrive

C then leave it alone

YMMV

I went from 1.333 high range to 0.996 in mine. Even though its a V8 and not the 2.25.

I find that you do get used to the higher gearing, need to change down to third where fourth used to do the same job. Or get to 135kmh at the bottom of the hill, A bit of an ask for your car no doubt.

The good thing about this is that low range is still the same.
