I checked the GPS readings against the vehicle instruments.
At 100 km/h on the dial the GPS reads 93 km/h. (7% or 7 km for every 100)
More interestingly
The odometer reading over 20km was only 0.1 km out (. That is 0.5 km for every 100.
This was motorway driving with good satellite reception apart from a short tunnel.
This suggests to me that the speedo is deliberately geared down but the odometer is accurate.
The 5km freeway odometer tests seem to verify this.

My Defender read way over the actual speed. Until I put the 33's on. Now it reads 0.5 kmh under. Near enough for a 'fender I rekon. :
So I guess if you can't fix your speedo any other way, just change tyre sizes.

Hi guys,
There is a place in the states called Speedhut. They do a GPS speedo that is 4" in diameter. I'm going to put one of these in my Defender. They have no cable or connection to the drivetrain at all, so you can put any tyre you like on and they will always be 100% accurate.
I am curious as to if that would be legal, running solely on a GPS driven speedo.
Would think it would have to be, if it on sale to the open market. The good thing about these things are, they are totally customisable. You can also go down the route of a pulse pickup style one and put the pickup from a disco in it. These are totally programmable via a switch at the back. You could read the "true" speed from your GPS, and input that into the speedo. No more changing gears for different ratios or tyre sizes.......
