Air filter options

Ok guys it that time of the year again and the air filter is out of the disco for a service. Now ive just noticed why everything is so brown out here, the amount of dust and crap in the filter is staggering. The disco has a snorkel and ive read on here before that finer filters and the like arn't recomended for discos. I could go with a donanldson pre cleaner but ive also been told that they arn't suitable for permanent attachment to deisels because they restrict the airflow too much. Hmmm any suugestions on an improvement from the standard paper filter. Ive got a few big trips planned this year.
cheers

Mick -- not sure what diesel engine you have (200, 300, TD5), but I have the TD5 and don't go near an oil/foam filter. Will stuff the mass air flow meter (>$400).

Just go with the paper and clean regularly.

Hmmm its a 300tdi but I just remebered something else. Im sure ive seen finer filter blue spongey things in the top ram section of snorkels, just behind the plastic mesh if you know what i mean. Would having one of these (if they truly exist) and then a regular paper filter still stuff up the airflow meter. If it would work cleaning it would be easy aswell. Anyway let me know your thoughts and i'll also chew the ear of the local parts man tomorrow.
cheers

Hi Mick-kelly
I would say 99.9% of heavy trucks/earth moving equipment run the Donaldson system these days, all this equipment these days is turbo diesel.Perhaps worth contacting the Donaldson people to see what they say aboyt your vehicle.
As a side track, the Isuzu and Mitsi trucks have this system, but on the cleaners it has Nippon-Donaldson Japan.I wonder if this is a product rip-off or an "under licence" product???

hmmm mulltiply litres by 61.03 to get to cubic inches

so it ends up at about 199 CFM for a 300tdi, thats a lot of air!

Just keep replacing the paper filter.

If there was any better way,

the big diesel manfacturers would be using it.

who told you pre cleaners restrict air flow????

I'm never coming back to the Isa if there is a need for precleaners in the streets!!!

It was ARB Southside in brissy that told me a precleaner would kill the engine on a disco. Im not to worried about the streets of Mt Isa for the dust although they have their days. Its the Thortonia Rd up past Gregory Downs and its alternate up past the three ways that cause the problem. That and the tracks around Escott, Bulldust like you wouldnt believe. When i took the air filter out the other day i bought it inside and dropped it on the lounge room loor from shoulder height. The dust mark is still there, the missus went balistic. I said thats why i need a newfilter.
