Help Please... Removing hydraulic pump from LT230

    HI everyone

I have a oil leak from between the hydraulic winch pump adapter and transfer case.
I have removed the 2 bolts holding the pump to the adapter but the pump still wont come away. When I pull the pump away the lever on the adapter moves. What havent I undone?
There is a lot of silicone holding it on as the top bolt was only half way in and cross threaded.
Obviously I cant remove the adapter until the pump is off.
All help will be greatly appreciated.

    Many thanks
    Michael.

Have not seen this setup, but have seen a few on trucks that have fretted in the spline on the pump shaft and locked into the pto spline.

Just a guess - with the 2 pump bolts removed, can you remove some of the adaptor bolts, then spin the pump around a bit, then undo the rest of the adaptor bolts?

Looks like there is some clearance to some of those.

You may have to remove the hydraulic lines to do this though.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    Thank you for the replies.
Im unable to rotate the pump at all with the bolts removed. I have not yet undone any hydraulic lines.
I think ill call MR Automotive later today and see what they say. Id hate to just pry it off and damage something. Hopefully its all the silicone holding it together but the lever moving on the adapter when I lightly lever the pump away is telling me to not do that.
    Cheers

I'm wondering why you can't undo the adapter first?

I would imagine that the hydraulic pump is a generic pump with a fitting on the inside to adapt from the rear mainshaft to the pump shaft and it is that fitting preventing your removing the pump.

My advice try to remove the adapter first.

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Unfortunately the pump covers 2 of the bolts retaining the adapter.

I spoke to MR Automotive this morning and they said it should slide straight off.
Hmmm very strange. Ive tried medium pressure levering with 2 large flat heads and its not coming apart.

Ill have another go this afternoon.

    Thanks again.

The adapter contains the dog clutch, and if memory is correct, slides back and forth to engage the LT230 output. The dog is always engaged with the pump output. In the off position the dog sits on the pump output only.

Before starting the removal, were you able to engage and disengage the pump? If yes, and again if my memory is correct, then try engaging (engine off of course) - this will move some of the dog clutch off the pump output.

The lever mechanism and dog clutch action are a bit clunky/not a precise action, but alignment is significantly improved once the pump output spline is inserted - much like a manual gearbox change system. So Rick1970 might be right, that no use over extended periods, no lubing, combined with chatter may have formed a slight step in in the dog in which the pump output is now catching. Conjecture of course. By the same token, the lever fork mechanism may have worn awkwardly into the dog clutch casing.

The pump output shaft is quite small in diameter, so might break before anything else.

If this is in a defender can you remove some flooring to get better access?

And MRAuto are correct, the pump should just slide out. Maybe the previous owner got some silicon inside - is there some 'rubber band' feel to the resistance to coming out?

Will it physically not turn, or just won't turn because of the hoses still being connected? If it is the latter, I'd undo the hoses and spin the pump around to get to the 2 adaptor bolts you currently can't get to, and take it off complete.

Thanks for all the replies. I really appreciate it.

So it turns out the idiot who fitted the pump 2000kms ago never removed the floor under the cubby box (which takes about 3 minutes) when he removed the transfer and gearbox to replace the clutch.

Because of this he cross threaded the top pump bolt at only 1/4 of the way in. Looks as though he removed it after cross threading and epoxyed the pump to the adapter.

Anyway someone paid good money for this fantastic effort. I have stripped it, cleaned, new gasket and re sealed. Hopefully its fixed!

    Thanks again for the help.
    Cheers

Good to hear you've sorted it.

I've got my pump installed in a Disco 1, cutting into the floor to accommodate it. Yet to complete the project.

I'm curious - what brand of winch are you running - size and location of the reservoir - and do you have an inline cooler?
