    R380 compatability

    Hello all,

I have a range rover classic with a retrofitted R380 in it. It's seen better days and I want to replace it, I don't think its going to be economical to repair. I don't know where it came from I expect a disco but am not sure.

I also have a late model TD5 Defender with an R380 in it, I have half an idea to swap the box from the defender to the rangie and put a brand new recon unit in the defender. Anyway....

I want to know how I can tell if the boxes are compatible between the vehicles and if not how I can determine which replacement box I would need / would be compatible for the rangie.

Sure I have the serial numbers for both boxes but is there a place where I can find out what the numbers relate to in terms of cross compatibility and overall specification?

Any info or direction gladly received.

    Thanks,

    Ian.

My understanding is they are not a straight swap. The Disco from memory has a short input shaft and the Defender has the long. However without knowing what was actually fitted to the RR hard to say. If you get the gearbox number and go to the Ashcroft site they have a section to identify the box.

I have just replaced mine with an Ashcroft unit with HD bearings, brought outright.

I'm pretty sure they aren't swappable as both the input shaft and the gear stick position are quite different. I do have a quite good R380 box out of a D2 V8 for sale, not sure if freight from SA would make it worthwhile though.
