Well she's arrived!!! 300 TDI Auto for my RR

    G'day Guys,

I have been dropping a few hints about RR since the VIC 4WD show and here is why!!!

I have bought a panel damaged 1997 Disco TDI Auto which I am using to rebuild my 1987 RR with. ALL the mechanicals will be swapped over - 300 TDI / ZF Auto / LT230 / 24 spline axels / fuel tank etc etc.

    AND she arrived today:

Amazing project. Quickquestion... Does the RR grille and lights go on to the Disco front end without mods?

    LRH,

    Now ain't that a "coinkidinki". 8O

I was driving along Ryde road at about 10:45 today and spotted a flat bed travelling towards Ryde from Concord. It was carrying two vehicles the first of which was a maroon Disco. As I drove alongside I noticed that it was an SE7 Tdi. sans rear window and bits of body work.

Truthfully I thought " I wonder if that is a delivery for LRH?"

    Question answered.

The fun begins. Where are you up to?

We expect a full report with photos.

    Another interesting question

You all would have seen chassis swaps with series LR, where the body is propped up and the chassis dropped. Here's a weird thought... Would it work on LRH's project? Undo body mounts and some ancilleries, lift body, drive RR chassis away, drive Disco chassis in and plonk it on !!!

    Practically yes however:

The RTA goose-steps in here. "Es ist verboten".

Chassis and Body will be forever joined. You can put in a different motor subject to engineering but the engine must be at least the age of the chassis/body. Most "modern" motor vehicles don't have this difference because they are monocoque.

LRH is putting a later model engine(97) in a chassis/body (87). The line of least regulatory resistance.

It is not so much an engineering issue as regulation to deter rebirthing of stolen vehicles.

    LRH will have some views.

    Cheers Mahn,

This is correct - I was trying to do the bodyswap, and even got a ruling from RTA.

The ruling was not favourable - they would not commit to rego at a later date.

The body swap would have been much easier.

But this way I get to have MORE fun

Looking good LRH, when is it due for completion? Or is it a long term thing? Matt

I'm taking off a couple of weeks around the Easter weekend, plus the misses is away for 4 weeks - so I can work all hours

The RR goes down to my local panel beaters on 19th March, where we are going to use their hoist to lift the RR body off and store it there for a week or so.

The RR chassis will then be returned to my place and have the V8 removed / chassis renovated (cleaned and painted) / fit the TDI & Auto / fit the 2" body lift kit.

All being well I will be back at the panel beaters just after the Easter weekend to lower the body back on to the chassis and start preping the engine bay / wiring etc.

Aim is to have it engineered and back on the road by end of April - too late for Ace's BBQ?
