sounds like it might just be the springs having a bit of a song and dance maybe?

G'day all, I'm new to this site and have a question that another Disco owner may answer.
When I'm offroading on rock and step hills, the steering gets a heavy knock and a type of shuddering/groaning noise comes from the front end. Not knowing alot about my SII Disco (99 model), I don't know if this some type of pressure release mechanism on the power steering pump or I have a problem developing.
Can anyone HELP me with this as a trip to a dealer is always costly and I may be worrying about nothing.
Thanks.
Rickster.
There are two types of people in this world, good and bad. The good sleep better, but the bad seem to enjoy the waking hours

Didn't know power steering had a pressure release other than take you hands off the the steering wheel. 8O
Power steering noise is normally a low sorta groan when it gets loaded up, perfect example is a car say with wide rubber, especially lock to lock in a car park trying to get out of a parking space. It's a real "rrooooooorrrrrrrroooooorrrr "ops: I'm not good with making car noises. I just get cars making good noises.

If it squeals under load then there is a problem, either the belt, low pressure from the pump or damage to the rack.
The way to check what's going on is try going up the same slope forwards then in reverse if safe and see if the rear wheels do what the fronts do.... might be a weight thing.
Just to make things confussing, the noise happened again today going down a driveway.
The wheels could be pointing straight, and it's like a small knock to one wheel sets it off. It sounds like a belt rubbing on a plastic guard for a few seconds.
I crawled under the car but could see no signs of where this could happen.
Looks like I'll be spending all Easter eating chocolate and looking for the noise.
Thanks for all your help anyway.
rickster.
can you feel it come up through the brake pedal?
Hey welcome to the house of madness Rickster.
Half you luck about Easter... though I won't be so lucky.

Probably not and working
Nothing comes through the brake pedal, or steering column
I had fitted OME shockers and springs last month, and this noise still happens now and then.
The only thing I havn't checked is the stering damper.
Does anyone have an easy way of checking the damper to see if it has gone?
rickster.
Now that you mention that .... I'm wondering whether the shockies are hitting on full extension because of wrong length/model to the springs.
