300tdi compression and glow plugs taughts

    Hi All,

Bit of your taught required on 300 tdi.
I had a chance to take compression test since I was taking out some parts out anyway, so I did it. Mind you this was on COLD engine with just over 260 000 kms.
    #1 - 21 bar
    #2 - 24
    #3 - 24
    #4 - 23
Do these readings look OK for cold engine?

Also please have a look at the photo, glow plugs are #4 #3 #2 #1. As you can see there is some oil on the body of 2 3 and 4. #1 was dry eventough photo shows some oil on it (probably me being clumsy). What would cause glow plugs bodies to be coated in oil?

    Thanx all!!!

Ive een wore numbers still running.

the oil might be from blow by or it might be the fine mist of oil that comes from the crankcase ventilator.

most likely tho its from the oil that always gthers in the glow plug hole on the head from the rocker cover gasket.

Specs state 24bar on operating temparature with 5bar max difference. So not so bad I guess, but could be better! Maybe leakdown test when I get time.

Since I changed glow plugs I don't get massive puff of smoke on start up. If I wait for glows to do their thing before starting that is.

Could be they get their oil coat from outside since my engine is wet on that side, rear half.
