If the noise wasn't there before and assuming you didn't drop or damage the gear set while rebuilding then I'd doubt it needs new gears. I think it's more likely you have incorrectly set the preload on one or more of the bearings.
Unfortunity it's unlikely to get better with use and only more damage will result if the bearing fails.
Assuming You have used the correct grade oil you will need to remove and recheck.

Agreed, sounds like a tight preload issue. Mine had a whine before I rebuilt it, and the input shaft preload was tight. All gears were in good condition. New bearings were installed and preloads set correctly and there is no more noise.

Its my son's car and he lives in Homebush and I am in brissy. Anyone know of someone down there who could sort it out for him? There used to be I bloke I went to and I used to drive out of the city and then turn off Parramatta road near the big water tower but that was 20 yrs ago so that's all I remember.
