Diary of TDI Conversion - Day 6 Mounts in the RR

    G'day Guys,

Well Day 6 started well, sunshine and progressing with the chassis mounts:

The mounts were all sourced from a damaged D110 / 300 TDI chassis I have in parts.

The first job was to cut out the mounts from the D110 chassis:

    Then to dry fit them:

and tack weld them into position:

then remeasure - only to find that D110 chassis are slightly narrower than a Disco / RR chassis and I hadn't taken this into consideration - this was the low point in the day.

We worked out that its about 8mm out - so we made some plates out of 4mm sheet, welded these onto the chassis and then the D110 engine mounts - VOILA!!!

As you can see we were loosing light on the last photos - so will re take them in the morning, but we did dry fit the motor - fitted perfectly.

Hope this good weather holds out, so the project can be finalise on time - but not within original budget!!!

    LRH,

    A couple of dumb questions:

    Which mounts are you replacing?

Why didn't you use the mounts from the Disco chassis rather than the 110?

Sun's out! I'd better get cracking too.

    Have a productive day.

    G'day OI,

The mounts I was replacing were the engine mounts - TDI ones are different and further back, and an exhaust hanger (before the centre box).

I don't want to cut the Disco chassis, as I would like to sell this complete after the project is finished, and I also have a damaged D110 which originally I bought for all the mounts / crossmembers for my D100 project - this chassis has saved me many times now, but there is not much left on it now. Every month or so I say I'll throw it out, but then it comes in handy for something!!!

I hope the weather holds out, as I want to clean / prep the RR chassis so I can paint it all on Monday - Sunday is a day off, going to the Royal Easter show with one of my Labradors for a dog show!!!

    Talk soon,

    LRH,

I figured that if the disco chassis has not been written off that it would be of value.

CJ and I had a day of mounts and rear bumper mods. Zen and the gentle art of angle grinder and oxy.

Hope the Lab shows well and the weather is kind.

plan is by end of April - if not earlier to have it engineered and on the road.

The good part is the misses is away, so I can spend all my time doing it and making as much mess until she gets home on 17.04.2005.

The bad part is these holidays were planned to work on the D100 project - need to shorten the chassis and the rear tub first.

After the RR project I hope to have a break from LR maintenance and get some more of my house reno done - this should then give me inspiration, avoiding the house reno, to do the D100!!!

The D100 was SUPPOSED to be work in progress over this holiday.

I will take some time off in a couple of months to do the D100 - let me get over the RR TDI project first.
