    Stub Axle Collar Question

    Hi All

Please have a look at the attached photos of the Stub axle collars on my 77 S3 ... Do you recommend that I replace them or are they still Okayama?

    Thanks

They aren't perfect, but personally, I would re use them (but I'd clean them a lot ). New grease in the wheel bearings and a new seal, and you should be fine. If you position the seal just out from where it used to sit, it should run on some fresh steel.
If you need to contact me please email homestarrunnerau@gmail.com - thanks - Gav.

    They look damaged to me.
It's not a hard job to change them and then at least the seal will be running on new metal.

I can tell you that RAEME would have cleaned them up and used them, for years to come. But would YOU trust the Army? In this case, I would. I don't know of any body that knows LR's more than the Armed Forces that used them, and the ARA had unlimited spare parts when they were using IIA's, so could have changed them to create work. .
That said, RAEME mechs weren't always the best.., but were pretty good under pressure.

    They are removable.
Why go to the trouble and expense of metal spraying them when they would cost about $20 ea to replace?
    Only my opinion......

The collars are replaceable on SII/SIIa but IIRC they are not replaceable on SIII

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Correct, although I don't think the changeover was exactly at the 2a/3 change. Can't remember whether it was late 2a or early 3.
