Thread: Stub Axle Collar Question

They aren't perfect, but personally, I would re use them (but I'd clean them a lot ). New grease in the wheel bearings and a new seal, and you should be fine. If you position the seal just out from where it used to sit, it should run on some fresh steel.

The question is do you want to pull it all apart again or just do the job once?. Pat

They look damaged to me.
It's not a hard job to change them and then at least the seal will be running on new metal.

I can tell you that RAEME would have cleaned them up and used them, for years to come. But would YOU trust the Army? In this case, I would. I don't know of any body that knows LR's more than the Armed Forces that used them, and the ARA had unlimited spare parts when they were using IIA's, so could have changed them to create work. .
That said, RAEME mechs weren't always the best.., but were pretty good under pressure.

Some we used to get metal sprayed. they looked worse than these from memory.

They are removable.
Why go to the trouble and expense of metal spraying them when they would cost about $20 ea to replace?

The collars are replaceable on SII/SIIa but IIRC they are not replaceable on SIII
