Bull Bars

I am investigating an alternative to my alloy "A bar" that bolts on to the chassis rails but leaves the original bumper and skirt intact

There is a WA mob that manufactures Smartbars.

http://www.smartbar.com.au/

My criteria are:

Light weight (I don't want to upgrade front coils or add unecessary mass)

Accepts Lightforce 240

Pedestrian friendly

Fixing for two aerials

Winch not required

Front recovery point options.

A TJM rather than ARB appearance.

I am about to explore this further but would welcome any advice or opinions.

Hi Mahn
Those "Plastic" roo bars you refer to are impressive.
I have seen their display at an agri fielday. They had a Rodeo 4x4 dualcab with a smartbar fitted. They have a strainer post(10 or 12 inch dia wooden fence post) mounted on a trolley on rails. They get a crowd watching and wind up the trolley and fire it at the Rodeo which is chained to the rails the trolley runs on.The impact really rocks the ute severely and "dents" the smartbar 4 or 5 inches. Then as you watch the dent in the bar "repairs" itself, like to see a metal one do that!!!!.Apparantly the plastic used has a very good "memory" and returns to shape an indefinate number of times. They had pics of steel and alloy roo and bull bars that had the same test, all unrepairable.
Their bars for falcoons and Dunnydoors are very stylish, look heaps beter than the manufacturers roo bars.
I dont think you will be sorry you bought one.

smart bars

My brother has a smart bar on his VT commodore (he is a shearer) and he tested it out two weeks ago by snotting a big roo near Burra in S.A. He hit it at 100 km/h and actually made too skippies for the price of one. He did bust one headlight mounting clips though and blow one globe. They do work. A mate of mine has one on his 4 * 4 Ford courier but he can not keep his spotties from vibrating their guts out. Might be something to do with crappy suspension on Jap vehicles though. Maybe someone on this site has one on their Landy :?:

I like these bars myself as in a much better looking design and look as if it's was built with the car at the factory.

One thing I didn't know about them is that they are plastic very interesting.

Hi Guys
What Gaz says about the vibration on a Courier 4x4 is correct, the neighbor has the same problem with his Courier/Smartbar,it leads to constantly blowing globes in the spotties.
If you intend buying one it would be worth talking to the manufacturer to find out if it only is a problem on jap diesels with torsion bar suspension.I dont think the Discos on their coils vibrate as bad as the jappers do.

Sounds like an interesting possible option for the Rangie, too.

Let us know what you learn.
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

I've sent off an enquiry.

Will keep you all in the "loop" or is that an "accessory noose"

I noticed that only the series 1 Disco is listed.

G'day fellas,

Neighbour has a smart bar on his Cruiser and collected a roo at Dubbo. id some permanent reworking of the bar, but he reckons it did less damage to the truck than a similar job with a steel bar he had previously.

To my knowledge, you can't use them with winches though.

Re the spotties working loose, put a shockie mounting rubber (or plastic) bush under the light, between the light and the bar mount. This should stop it working loose.

Cheers,

Roger
