    4.6L V8 Upgrade

    Guys,

I'm looking to upgrade my existing 3.9L engine to a 4.6L. I have worked on most parts of my 87 Rangie, including rebuilding the transfer case, but have never really ventured into engine rebuilding.

The plan is to purchase a 4.6L short motor (as new as possible) and to use my existing heads with all new timing gear, cams, rockers etc.

Has anyone here done this conversion and are there any steps I need to take/pitfals to watch out for

    Thanks in advance

You'll need a crankshaft spacer which fits over the crank nose and comes through the timing case oil seal (available from Graeme Cooper Automotive).

The block, if a late model, won't have the outer row of bolt holes. So there will be some unused holes in the heads.

    G'day Hawk,

Forget the upgrade if the donk is still in good nick.

I pondered that path and was directed to a supercharger instead.

Bought a secondhand Eaton and had it fitted, and the result is awesome.

The 3.9 has 260,000 km on the dial, but it now belts up long steep hills in top gear at 110 kph without a problem, also pulls away from 35 kph in top gear happily.

Much cheaper than a 4.6 rebuild, and a lot quicker to get back on the road.

    Cheers,

    Roger
