Flaking paint - can it be repaired?

The paint on my Defender's bonnet and upper guards is flaking/peeling and looks crappy.

(The car has likely spent ALL of its life outside.)

No I'm not expecting or even wanting a 'showroom shine?.

I would like to cleanit up a bit before I put chequer plate on ? so the non-covered parts don't lookutterly rubbish !

The car is a 1995 white Defender and I'm assuming it was apaint which had a clear coat. If so thenI'm unsure whether the peeling would be just the top layer or all layers of theclear coat.

My plan is (and tell me if this is wrong please) to rub it downwith some wet 3000 grit paper, then cut and polish it with appropriate compounds.

So I'd welcome any tips / comments and also if anyone inBracken Ridge area happens to have a polisher ? save a lot of elbow grease.

    Thanks
It's not broken. It's "Carbon Neutral".

base coat is porous ... best bet is too probably strip it back and paint it (just use a machinary oil based and and brush ) if your going to cover it with plates. Otherwise it'll no doubt rust!

It's the parts that are NOT going to be covered in the plates that concern me.

I really don't want to have to pay for a respray esp as it will mean the car has to be somewhere else for days....

P.S. I doubt aluminium will rust......

Hey you could be right .... I didn't realise the guards were aluminium. still if the clear is delaminating, the only fix is to sand it back and respray A new paint job is more than just about any old cars market value sadly .... But hey, it's fun to to tinker yourself right Wouldn't a defender look "right" with brush painted guards

Why don't you post some piccies ... rubbing it with 3000 will acheive nothing other than sore arms though if the clear coat is delaminated

I'll try to get a few pics over the weekend....

The rubbing would at least remove the peeling flakes.....
