Rear Jerry Can Holders for Landy

This does not relate to any perticular model, but i'm after info on how you mounted your Jerry Cans on your Landy or any 4WD.

Forgetting Legalities of if your allowed to put Jerry cans inside or on the back of the 4wd.

OK my thoughts for the Defender are to make 2 swing away carriers.
1 for the spare Wheel and 1 for the Jerry Cans

I have arriving a Swing away for the Spare wheel, so i'm going to copy that and improve it then sell the Orig new one.

I only bought it as we have a high demand for Swing away carriers at the right price in Aust. So it will be the Template then modified to Suit us.

Then the 2nd swing away on the LH side will be for 2 Jerry's. It will be a removable item incase you are not needing to cart 2 jerrys while your dropping the Kids off to Kindy.

So bring on the Pix and idea's.

Storage will start soon in the Defender, i have 2 sheets of 12mm ply so i'll start very soon.
I have so many idea's but this one will be different. i'll be incorporating the 2nd battery in the Storage, rather than in the battery Box as i am going the easy way out for starters.

Hi Steve

Cannot help with the jerry can holder however would be interested to see photos when you are finished.

Click on the link below to my photo's, not sure if the setup will suit you however you will see that I have installed the batteries behind the fridge slide. I have the isolation switch between the front seats (already installed when I purchased) already thinking about changing from the idot type switch to an automatic/electronic type as twice over easter I forgot to either isolate or unisolate the batteries. The cable run from the battery box to the centre console where the isolation switch is fitted than out the back of the console across the floor to the cargo area. I'm yet to fit some protective coverings around the cables. If you are running ply across the top of the wheel arches you should be able to fit batteries underneath.

Hi Steve ... it's always been a bit of a problem to fit 2 swing arms at the back of a Defender baring in mind that a large part is actually the door and the rest cannot be covered because of lights and the number plate. Come to think of it .. I've never seen a Defender with 2 swing arms :?: You also have the issue of always having to open the arm to get into the back. Wouldn't a roof rack be a better option to carry the jerries and a second spare??

For the Jerry Can holder itself I can suggest Aussie Disposals http://www.aussiedisposals.com.au/product_...38&parent_ids=6, they have a heavy duty one for $46.

I would get 2 of these bolt them lying down on a roof rack .. no tie downs required .. no swing arms to get in the way .. no extra weight. (if you have a roof rack already of course )

Just a thought ...

Hiya Steve,

The only twin swingaway I've seen was on the rear of a QuadTec box back.

IMO, I'd avoid sticking things on the back/side/roof when it comes to fuel/water storage. What's wrong with putting tanks underneath/inside using some of the dead space and use the advantage of keeping the weight low?

1 - You can replace the original tank with a long-range version.
2 - Another fuel tank under the drivers seat (45L)
3 - A fuel tank can be stuck in the rear wing between the filler & main tank (45L).
4 - Water can be put in the passenger side rear wing (45L)
5 - Another spot for a custom water tank is under the rear seats (60-70L).

Hope that gives you some more food for thought.

Mark.

With all those fuel tanks mentioned above you will certainly weight it up!

The swing-away carrier on the back of my County isn't bad for a home made one.

If anyone wants photos for ideas, let me know.

Also, I took a lot of photos of various mods done by people to RRs, Discos, and Series/Defenders at Cooma in 1998.

I can scan those and put them up somewhere.
