Hi, are the M & S warnings working on ignition self test?
Hi all,
My Disco recently deleloped a "little" quirk, in that it only seems to have 3rd gear. I assume its 3rd as it runs at 2250rpm at 70klms. Although that could be 2nd maybe. Its an automatic.
Reverse is fine, Park and Neutral are all present too. I made the effort of taking off the xyz switch and it's as clean as the day it came out of the factory. Had actually hoped this would be it from reading other people's posts, but alas.
About 2 weeks ago I lent her to a mate of mine and he mentioned (after bringing it back), that it was reving hard without picking up speed. Instead of pulling over and calling me, he chose to ignore it and keep driving. (Dont worry, he's on my S**T list).
At that time I pulled out the transmission inspection plug, put in about 2ltrs of DEX III and once it started coming back out, closed it off.
I checked it again today and the level is still fine. I'm not getting "limp mode" flashing lights. No matter if I try to gear down or start in 1st, it remains in 3rd.
I'm hoping there is a non "gearbox rebuild" issue.......any thoughts?
Cheers,
Peter

Yeah, they come on fine as the key turns and disappear once motor starts.
Then it's or a mechanical fault or the ECU is missbehaveing cos that 3'rd gear thing is classic limp mode operation but in this case the warnings should be on intermittently...you should do a proper oil and filter change though

I have the beast booked into Wyong Automatics which is where English Auto sends all their gearbox problems to, on Monday.
It appears from speaking to English Auto, that they believe one of the gearbox "controllers" in the box itself may be the culprit.
Does anyone know anything about these? Are they accessible from through the sump without removing the box?
Are these like the solenoids in a ford auto, which can "burn out" and simply need to be replaced?
Just trying to work out if this is something I can do or whether it's just easier to let the professionals do it.
Cheers, Pete'
Usually a component failure within the valve block would give you the flashing M+S and log a fault code, that's why i asked about the self test... it is accesible without removing the box

Well the saga continues....
Rod at Wyong Automatics have been through the box, checking all the solenoids (they have a machine that they hook up to them), and they are all fine. They checked the XYZ switch (they called it something else but I can't remember), and that's fine too.
I was sorta hoping it was the solenoids....
Update soon. Hope this will eventually help someone else as it's a nightmare for me!!![]()
Ok, the actual outcome from this is that the solenoids hadn't been checked physically but rather via computer. Anyway, upon taking the sump cover off, half the clutch plates (in chunks), were in the bottom of the box.
so......I'm wondering which transmissions will fit this model? Will the auto box on the V8 disco 2001 fit this for example?
The price of rebuilding the box seems extreme!
